Mini Tornado

It was very hot, humid and still in work today. A colleague and myself went outside at about 1:30 pm for a cigarette. Suddenly a huge blast of wind came from nowhere and within a few seconds we saw a mini tornado pass in front of us, it was a swirling mass of dust about 18 foot high and it passed at quite a speed picking up stuff from some skips it passed and throwing the stuff out further along before diappearing into the distance! For a moment we looked at each other in disbelief "did that just happen?" There were several dozen witnesses to the event but as yet we don't know if anyone caught it on a mobile phone as a still or video.

This happened on the outskirts of Bristol today at lunchtime.

Never thought I would see something like that!

I have seen them in the Bristol Channel where they form waterspouts but I have never seen one on land - still can't believe it!

That must have been quite a sight. Tornadoes are very frightening things. We used to get more of this type of weather when I was young and I have to say, I don't miss it.

  As it was only a mini tornado and it all happened so quickly there really was no time to feel scared - just amazed.

Interesting post and glad there was no damage. I hope someone has got a photo.

It seems tornados are becoming more common in the UK in recent years.

  I rang the site today but nobody has come forward with a photo which is a shame but it all happened so fast I think we were all stunned!

That must have been really mind-blowing...not the sort of thing you'd expect to see in England. Hopefully someone will have managed to get shots of it on a mobile. Perhaps there will be something about it on your local radio station or TV.

We had one in Cootehill, Ireland on the Dromore river, it lifted my 12 foot keepnet out of the water and dumped it, fish as well, onto a wooden platform about 10 metres to my left. I was 4 metres from it, watched it but never felt a thing apart from a light whooshing sound & a light breeze.

Hi, I live in Colwyn Bay and there was a link on my blog to yours (we both have the word Welsh in the blogs?)
I was quite envious when I read about your tornado, nothing like that ever happens here in Colwyn Bay!. I am glad i found your blog, it is both nice and interesting, its a nice photo as well (the mermaid). I am trying to statr a 'card business' and as it does Welsh Birthday Cards --just in case anyone who reads your blog is interested.

  Good luck with the card business, my sister in law makes cards and sells hers through fairs, fetes and friends/recommendations and she makes a reasonable wage out of something that started as a hobby for her.
